Seiki Jutsu
The Art of the Non-Subtle Life Force
Master of Seiki Jutsu
Seiki jutsu is a unique healing, revitalization, and life transformation practice dating back to ancient Japan. It is based on the principle that seiki, the amplified life force, must flow unhindered through the body for optimal health, performance, and wellbeing. The core seiki jutsu practice is called seiki taisou, a daily spontaneous movement exercise that is typically performed while seated. Its primary purpose is to awaken, circulate, and heighten seiki in oneself. Unlike most body work and energy-oriented therapeutic methods, seiki jutsu has no preconceived movements or preferred routines. Instead, the effortless, non-purposeful movement of the body brings forth its tacit teaching. Over time, performance of this energizing movement practice results in valued outcomes for the practitioner.
The seiki jutsu tradition offers three levels of engagement:
1) the daily spontaneous movement exercise
2) hands-on healing intervention
3) vibrant transmission of enhanced seiki (see the video below)
The foremost practitioner and master of seiki jutsu in the 20th century was Ikuko Osumi Sensei of Tokyo. She received seiki from her aunt in 1935 and was spiritually inspired by stories about their Buddhist priest ancestor from the 1600s, Eizon Hoin, who was legendary for numerous miracles. Today he is honored as a kami (spirit) who protects the weak, maintains justice, and guards against fire. Hoin’s grandfather was the famous samurai, Katsumoto Katagiri (1556-1615), one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake.
While Osumi’s gifts as a healer and spiritual teacher were highly respected in Japan and her clients included many renowned artists, national treasures, scientists, and leaders, she refused to accept offers to turn her work into a religion. Sensei was referred to as an exemplary Shinto shaman in Religions of the World: Shinto (Williams, 2005), and her life story was written by Malcom Ritchie (1988) and Bradford Keeney (1999).
On October 12, 1996, Osumi Sensei formally entrusted Bradford Keeney (pictured below) with “the role of representing and overseeing the teaching of seiki jutsu as well as the transmission of seiki to others.” Brad was chosen as her successor, along with Sensei’s assistant, Okajima Sensei of Japan. In 2014, Hillary Keeney became the next successor to this lineage, carrying on the charge to represent and oversee the teaching and transmission of seiki to others. In 2014, the Keeneys published the primary text, Seiki Jutsu: The Practice of Non-Subtle Energy Medicine (Keeney & Keeney, 2014).
Over the past decades, Osumi Sensei gave seiki transmission to many clients. Each of them received an inscribed piece of wood confirming that she gave them seiki and taught them the daily movement practice for nurturing its vitality. Today, the Keeneys host seiki jutsu inside Sacred Ecstatics, their unique orientation to ecstatic healing and mysticism. Members of The Sacred Ecstatics Guild, overseen by the Keeneys, are given seiki and taught the daily practice of seiki jutsu (seiki taisou), as well as its recently innovated form that the Keeneys call “Ecstatic Sound Movement.” Brad and Hillary have also encouraged some former and present Guild members to teach the daily seiki movement practice.
The other two aspects of seiki jutsu—seiki healing and seiki transmission—cannot be personally learned or earned outside of lineage supervision. These specialized practices of seiki jutsu are presently administered by the Keeneys who honor Sensei’s request to maintain oversight of the seiki jutsu tradition. As caretakers of the knowledge and the sacred objects given to Osumi Sensei from her teacher, the Keeneys look forward to someday passing these custodial markers and responsibilities to the next holder(s) of the lineage.
